Happy 5th International Day of the Girl Child!

Happy 5th Interational Day of the Girl Child!

Today we take a moment to think about the needed opportunities for girls and increase awareness of gender inequality faced by girls all over the world. This inequality includes things such as the right and access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence against women and unfree child marriage.

Max Foundation has been contributing to this for many years. Our approach focuses on the empowerment of women and girls, since they are the ones who are affected most by inadequate water and sanitary facilities. Women are often responsible for carrying water, and they are vulnerable to (sexual) harassment when they are unable to access safe sanitary facilities. Furthermore, we built separate latrines for boys and girls. This way, girls are not forced to drop out of school when they start menstruating.

Unfortunately, many girls in Bangladesh still have their babies at a young age, which is extremely risky for them and their baby. Our Safe Motherhood program focuses on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) as well. It addresses family planning and the prevention of early marriages and pregnancies.

As ‘Day of the Girl – US’ states perfectly: “October 11 is not just a day; it’s a movement.”
