Bangladesh is the first South Asian nation to become open defecation free

Where in 2003 Bangladesh still revealed an alarmingly poor condition of over 42% of the households who did not have any access to latrines and defecated in the open, nowadays open defecation in the country is reduced to just 1%.

In cooperation with numerous partnerships Bangladesh successfully improved sanitation to all strata of the society. Also, Max Foundation actively supported the Bangladesh government efforts to make the country open defecation free. Sanitation campaigns considered low-costs latrines, gender sensitivity and changing social behaviour on open defecation.

This radical transformation is a major success story for Bangladesh and even having a household toilet has become a status symbol. The expansion of sanitation coverage contributed significantly to the improvement of Bangladesh’s health sector, and waterborne diseases decreased by 7% thanks to the progress in sanitation coverage.
