Donors inspiration visit to Bangladesh

On November 17 & 18, a joint team of donors and staff of Max Foundation visited two villages in the project areas of Max Foundation in Patuakhali - Bangladesh. The "Max value for WASH II" project in this area is implemented by Max Foundation in close cooperation with local partners Shushilan and SPACE.

The program strives to effectively reduce child mortality in the South coastal areas of Bangladesh by directly addressing the Sustainable Development Goals: ensuring availability and sustainability of water and sanitation for all; ending all forms of malnutrition (specifically stunting for children under five years of age, nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women); reducing maternal mortality; ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age and ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health care services.

Max Foundation strives to achieve its ultimate goal - effectively reducing child mortality – through three main intermediate goals which are directly correlated to 3 main pillars:

1. Lowering the number of water and hygiene related diseases (WASH)
2. Reducing malnutrition (NUTRITION)
3. Improving and advancing safe motherhood and reproductive health (SAFE MOTHERHOOD & REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH).

The team members exchanged views on different issues with the project implementing officials, local government, sanitation market operators, school teachers, students and different economic and gender groups of local people. They highly appreciated Max Foundation's approach for generational behavior change towards safe water, hygiene, child nutrition and sexual reproductive health.

The visiting team consisted of: Thea van Bommel, chairman at Schumacher-Kramer Stichting (SK foundation) and director Rabobank; Anita Oosterlee, program manager sustainability & water at Aqua for All; Annet van den Hoek, project manager at Ineke Feitz Stichting; Huib Morelisse from the advisory council at Max Foundation; Kaat Burbidge-van Velde, head of fundraising at Max Foundation and Joep van Belkom, board member at Max Foundation. The visit was hosted by Riad Mahmud, Country Director Bangladesh at Max Foundation. Our program manager and program engineer supported the visit in the field.
