Pneumonia and diarrhea are the most important causes of death of children under the age of five. UNICEF estimates that 58 percent of diarrhea-related diseases are caused by a lack of safe water, adequate sanitary facilities and hygienic practices. Particularly public defecation – which is still practiced by one billion people worldwide – exposes whole communities to the risk of diarrhea and other diseases. In Bangladesh, over 40 percent of the population has no access to adequate sanitary facilities.
